The NI-DNET User Manual provides an introduction to DeviceNet, hardware specifications, and information about how to get started with application development.
The NI-DNET Programmer Reference Manual is a complete reference for all NI-DNET functions.
All manuals are in Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format (PDF). You can download the Acrobat Reader for free at www.adobe.com.
Open the documents from Start»All Programs»National Instruments»NI-DNET.
Within the National Instruments LabVIEW and LabWindows™/CVI™ development environments, links to the NI-DNET Programmer Reference Manual are in the online help for each NI-DNET function.
Online help for NI-DNET features within Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX), including the NI-DNET Configurator and Analyzer help, is in the MAX Help Topics menu.

You must install and run the NI-DNET software on the following operating systems:
  • Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit)

  • Windows Vista (32-bit and 64-bit)

  • Windows XP (32-bit)

Supported Hardware

The NI-DNET software supports the following National Instruments DeviceNet hardware on Windows 7 32-bit/Windows Vista 32-bit/Windows XP 32-bit:
  • PCI-DNET

Additional Programming TopicsImportant Changes to Existing NI-DNET Applications

To improve NI-DNET integration into the overall National Instruments product framework, NI-DNET version 1.4 and later uses a different error code format than previous NI-DNET versions.
This new error code format may require minor changes to your existing NI-DNET application code. For example, some existing C/C++ files with NI-DNET code report compiler errors until you make the appropriate changes.
The changes to your code entail:
  • Code simplification to convert an NI-DNET error to a useful description.

  • Replacing constants used in comparisons for specific errors.

For details of the changes required to update your NI-DNET code, go to ni.com and search for KnowledgeBase article 3A2E8THR, Changes in Error Codes as of NI-DNET Version 1.4.

Automating the Installation of NI Products

You can automate the installation of most NI products using command-line arguments to suppress some or all of the installer user interface and dialog boxes. However, starting with the August 2012 releases (products using NI Installers version 3.1 or later), you may need to perform additional steps before or during a silent installation of NI software.
If the NI product you are installing uses Microsoft .NET 4.0, the .NET installer may run before any NI software installs and may require a reboot before the installation of NI software begins. To avoid a .NET reboot, install .NET 4.0 separately before you install NI software.
For more information, refer to the following KnowledgeBase articles:
  • For more information on silent installations of individual NI products, refer to KB 4CJDP38M, Automating the Installation of a Single Installer.

  • For more information on silent installations of suited NI products, such as NI Developer Suite, refer to KB 4GGGDQH0, Automating the Installation of a Suited Installer.

  • To determine what version of NI Installers your product contains, refer to KB 4CJDR18M, How Can I Determine the Type and Version of My National Instruments Installer?.
