Overview
The LabVIEW Electrical Power Suite provides VIs that you can use to create applications to measure, analyze, monitor, and record electrical power data and phenomena. You can use the Basic Measurement VIs to perform basic electrical power analysis and use the Power Quality VIs to perform power quality measurement on the NI CompactRIO platform, NI CompactDAQ system, and PXI platform. You can use the Synchrophasor VIs to perform synchrophasor measurement and use the Protection VIs to implement protection devices on the NI CompactRIO platform.
The Electrical Power Suite complies with the following standards:
IEC 61000-4-7:2002, Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) - Part 4-7: Testing and Measurement Techniques - General Guide on Harmonics and Interharmonics Measurements and Instrumentation, for Power Supply Systems and Equipment Connected Thereto
IEC 61000-4-15:2010, Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) - Part 4-15: Testing and Measurement Techniques - Flickermeter - Functional and Design Specifications
IEC 61000-4-30:2008, Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) - Part 4-30: Testing and Measurement Techniques - Power Quality Measurement Methods
IEEE Std C37.111:1999, IEEE Standard Common Format for Transient Data Exchange (COMTRADE) for Power Systems
IEEE Std C37.118:2005, Synchrophasors for Power Systems
EN 50160:2007, Voltage Characteristics of Electricity Supplied by Public Distribution Networks
System Requirements
In addition to the system requirements for the LabVIEW Development System, the Electrical Power Suite has the following requirements:
LabVIEW 2013 Full or Professional Development System (32-bit)
LabVIEW 2013 FPGA Module
LabVIEW 2013 Real-Time Module
NI-RIO 13.0
NI-DAQmx 9.7.5 or later (only required if you use National Instruments DAQ devices with the Electrical Power Suite)
At least 200 MB of disk space
Refer to the LabVIEW Readme for additional system requirements and supported operating systems for LabVIEW 2013.
Installation Instructions
Double-click the setup.exe file in the root directory of the Electrical Power Suite installer and follow the instructions on the screen to install the Electrical Power Suite.
Electrical Power Suite Updates and Notifications
National Instruments posts information about critical updates and security notifications on ni.com. Visit ni.com/info and enter Info Code updates to access this information.
New Features
The LabVIEW 2013 Electrical Power Suite includes the following new features:
Protection VIs—Use the Protection VIs to implement protection devices on the NI CompactRIO platform. You can use the Protection VIs to measure input energizing quantities, set thresholds of pick-up signals, and delay for certain time intervals before trip signals assert. You also can use the Protection VIs to control the automatic reclosing and lockout of circuit breakers. If you want to know information about validation tests, visit ni.com/info and enter Info Code ex9nfa to access this information.
Power Quality VIs for National Instruments DAQ Devices—Use the Power Quality VIs to perform power quality measurement on the NI CompactDAQ system and PXI platform.
Known Issues
You can access the software and documentation known issues list online. Refer to the National Instruments website for an up-to-date list of known issues in the Electrical Power Suite.
Accessing the Help
Refer to the LabVIEW Help, accessible by selecting Help»LabVIEW Help from LabVIEW, for information about the Electrical Power Suite.
Finding Examples
Select Help»Find Examples from LabVIEW to launch the NI Example Finder. Navigate to the Toolkits and Modules»Electrical Power folder to access the examples. You can modify an example VI to fit an application, or you can copy and paste from one or more examples into a VI that you create.
You also can find the examples for the Electrical Power Suite in the labviewexamplesElectrical Power directory.
Automating the Installation of NI Products
You can automate the installation of most NI products using command-line arguments to suppress some or all of the installer user interface and dialog boxes. However, starting with the August 2012 releases (products using NI Installers version 3.1 or later), you may need to perform additional steps before or during a silent installation of NI software.
If the NI product you are installing uses Microsoft .NET 4.0, the .NET installer may run before any NI software installs and may require a reboot before the installation of NI software begins. To avoid a .NET reboot, install .NET 4.0 separately before you install NI software.
For more information, refer to the following KnowledgeBase articles:
For more information on silent installations of individual NI products, refer to KB 4CJDP38M, Automating the Installation of a Single Installer.
For more information on silent installations of suited NI products, such as NI Developer Suite, refer to KB 4GGGDQH0, Automating the Installation of a Suited Installer.
To determine what version of NI Installers your product contains, refer to KB 4CJDR18M, How Can I Determine the Type and Version of My National Instruments Installer?.
How to Use NI Software with Microsoft Windows 8
When you install National Instruments software on Microsoft Windows 8, you will notice a few additional tiles on the Start screen, including shortcuts to NI application software products such as NI LabVIEW, Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX), and the new NI Launcher.
Using NI Launcher
NI Launcher helps you find and launch installed NI products. It provides you with a method of finding NI products similar to the Start menu in previous versions of Microsoft Windows. To use NI Launcher, click the NI Launcher tile on the Start screen. NI Launcher launches the desktop and opens a menu containing a list of NI products. Click any NI product to launch it.
Note MAX does not appear as a desktop shortcut when installed on Microsoft Windows 8. You can launch MAX either from the Start screen or from within NI Launcher. |
Pinning Frequently Used Applications
For convenience, you can pin your most-used NI applications, such as MAX, to either the Start screen or the Taskbar on the desktop, as necessary:
Current Application | Icon Location | Pin to Action |
Windows 8 Desktop | Desktop Taskbar | Right-click application and select Pin to Taskbar |
Windows 8 Desktop | Start screen | Right-click application and select Pin to Start |
Windows 8 Start screen | Desktop Taskbar | Right-click application and select Pin to taskbar from the menu bar on the bottom of the screen |
Finding All Programs
If you want to find a particular application or related files, such as documentation files, from the Start screen, you can access all installed files by right-clicking anywhere on the Start screen and selecting All apps. A list of all installed software and related files appears, in alphabetical order by creator or type.
