Overview

The Control Design and Simulation Module provides tools with which you can analyze open-loop model behavior, design closed-loop controllers, simulate dynamic systems, and deploy models and control systems to real-time hardware. The Control Design and Simulation Module also provides tools to complete the entire system identification process, which involves building mathematical models of a dynamic system based on a set of measured stimulus and response data samples.
Use the Control Design Assistant to load and save models, perform analysis on systems, and design controllers. Refer to the Control Design Assistant Readme for information about the Control Design Assistant.
Use the System Identification Assistant to create a project that encompasses the whole system identification process. Refer to the System Identification Assistant Readme for information about the System Identification Assistant.

System Requirements

In addition to the system requirements for the LabVIEW Development System, the Control Design and Simulation Module has the following requirements:
  • LabVIEW 2021 Full or Professional Development System

  • At least 800 MB of disk space

  • (Optional) LabVIEW MathScript Module for designing, analyzing, and simulating linear controller models using a text-based language

Refer to the LabVIEW Readme for additional system requirements and supported operating systems for LabVIEW.

Supported Operating Systems

The Control Design and Simulation Module supports the following operating systems:
WindowsWindows 10 (version 1909)
Windows Server 2016
Note  Refer to Unsupported Windows Operating Systems for more information about support for Microsoft Windows OSes.
macOSmacOS 11 (x86_64 only) or 10.15
LinuxopenSUSE LEAP 15.2
openSUSE LEAP 15.1
Red Hat Enterprise 8
Red Hat Enterprise 7
CentOS 8
CentOS 7
Ubuntu 20.04
Ubuntu 18.04

Limitations on Windows (64-bit), macOS, and Linux

The following features are available on Windows:
  • Control Design Assistant

  • Real-Time support

  • System Identification Assistant

  • System Identification VIs

Installation Instructions

Download the Control Design and Simulation Model installer from ni.com/downloads. NI software includes NI Package Manager to handle the installation. Refer to the NI Package Manager Manual for more information about installing, removing, and upgrading NI software using Package Manager.
(macOS, Linux)
NI provides a repository add-on for all supported drivers that you can install using your Linux distribution's native package manager.
  • Visit ni.com/info and enter the Info Code LinuxRepository.

  • Download the installer for the repository add-on for your Linux distribution.

  • Install the repository add-on using the rpm command.

  • Select and install Control Design and Simulation Model driver packages through your Linux distribution's package manager.

After the driver package(s) are installed, you must rebuild the new packages for the system kernel. NI recommends that you run the command 'dkms autoinstall' after installation, and before rebooting the system, to install the latest revision of all modules that have been installed for other kernel revisions. After doing so, the installed device drivers will function immediately on the next system start.

You also can find the LabVIEW examples for the Control Design and Simulation Module in the labviewexamplesControl and Simulation directory and the (Windows) labviewexamplesSystem Identification directory. You can modify an example VI to fit an application, or you can copy and paste from one or more examples into a VI that you create.

Automating the Installation of NI Products

You can automate the installation of most NI products using command-line arguments to suppress some or all of the installer user interface and dialog boxes.
If the NI product you are installing uses Microsoft .NET 4.6.2, the .NET installer may run before any NI software installs and may require a reboot before the installation of NI software begins. To avoid a .NET reboot, install .NET 4.6.2 separately before you install NI software.
For more information about automating the installation of NI products, refer to Automating an Installer in the NI Package Manager manual.
