Overview
The LabVIEW Desktop Execution Trace Toolkit for Windows captures execution data from LabVIEW applications running on the desktop. The toolkit displays the data it captures, called trace data, as events in a table view that you can browse, save, or export to a text file. For each execution event, the table view displays the type of event, the time the event occurs, the VI in which the event occurs, and any additional details that are available. Use trace data to debug and optimize large LabVIEW applications, including those with multiple loops, client-server architectures, dynamically loaded VIs, and so on.
System Requirements
In addition to the system requirements for the LabVIEW Development System, the Desktop Execution Trace Toolkit has the following requirements:
LabVIEW 2009 Base, Full, or Professional Development System (32-bit) or later
At least 1 GB of disk space
Pentium 4 processor or equivalent
One of the following operating systems:
Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit)
Windows Vista (32-bit and 64-bit)
Windows XP SP3 (32-bit) or later
Windows Server 2003 R2 (32-bit)
Windows Server 2008 R2 (64-bit)
The LabVIEW Desktop Execution Trace Toolkit for Windows installer does not support Windows 2000/NT/Me/98/95 or the Windows Server non-R2 editions.
Refer to the LabVIEW Readme for additional system requirements and supported operating systems for LabVIEW.
Installation Instructions
You can install all of your LabVIEW products—including the Desktop Execution Trace Toolkit—using the LabVIEW 2012 Platform DVDs. Refer to the LabVIEW Installation Guide on the LabVIEW Platform DVD 1 for installation instructions and system requirements.
To request additional LabVIEW Platform DVDs, refer to the National Instruments Web site.
Note If you purchased this product with an NI Software Suite or NI Product Bundle, use the installation media that shipped with your purchase to install this product.
New Features
You can now save and load filters, which can be useful if you want to run the same trace multiple times, or if you know you always want to filter out certain events.
In the Configure Displayed Events dialog box that appears when you click the Configure Filter button at the top right corner of the table view, use the Save and Load buttons to save and load filter configurations.
Known Issues
You can access the software and documentation known issues list online. Refer to the National Instruments Web site for an up-to-date list of known issues in the LabVIEW 2012 Desktop Execution Trace Toolkit.
Bug Fixes
The following items are the IDs and titles of a subset of issues fixed in the LabVIEW 2012 Desktop Execution Trace Toolkit for Windows. This table is not an exhaustive list of issues fixed in the current version of the Desktop Execution Trace Toolkit. If you have a CAR ID, you can search this list to validate the issue has been fixed.
ID | Fixed Issue |
161344 | Deselecting all filters in the Configure Displayed Events dialog box causes no events to appear, as though filters were still applied |
170427 | Event types are difficult to find in the Find window |
321800 | DETT error message about VI Server could be better |
337766 | Desktop Trace Execution Toolkit showing hidden controls on New Trace Connection dialog box |
Accessing the Help
Refer to the LabVIEW Desktop Execution Trace Toolkit for Windows Help by selecting Help»Launch Help in the Desktop Execution Trace Toolkit.
Refer to the Getting Started with the LabVIEW Desktop Execution Trace Toolkit for Windows manual, by selecting Help»Getting Started Manual in the toolkit, for exercises that demonstrate how to open, configure, and execute trace sessions.
Finding Examples
You can find examples for the Desktop Execution Trace Toolkit in the labviewexamplesDesktop Execution Trace directory.
Automating the Installation of NI Products
You can automate the installation of most NI products using command-line arguments to suppress some or all of the installer user interface and dialog boxes. However, starting with the August 2012 releases (products using NI Installers version 3.1 or later), you may need to perform additional steps before or during a silent installation of NI software.
If the NI product you are installing uses Microsoft .NET 4.0, the .NET installer may run before any NI software installs and may require a reboot before the installation of NI software begins. To avoid a .NET reboot, install .NET 4.0 separately before you install NI software.
For more information, refer to the following KnowledgeBase articles:
For more information on silent installations of individual NI products, refer to KB 4CJDP38M, Automating the Installation of a Single Installer.
For more information on silent installations of suited NI products, such as NI Developer Suite, refer to KB 4GGGDQH0, Automating the Installation of a Suited Installer.
To determine what version of NI Installers your product contains, refer to KB 4CJDR18M, How Can I Determine the Type and Version of My National Instruments Installer?.
